When it comes to making chemistry labs greener, there are two overarching goals: to reduce the consumption of energy and resources and reduce the production of hazardous and nonhazardous waste. Clearly, these two goals are inextricably linked. What is more crucial is linking the curricular goals of a chemistry lab with these green ideas. So, how can we effectively build students’ understanding of key concepts while minimizing the consumption of resources and the production of waste? Try conducting microscale labs and using less hazardous chemical alternatives. This column provides some ideas to help get you started.
