Models for Integrating Technology in Higher Education: The Physics of Sound

Journal of College Science Teaching -- Summer 2006

Institutions that place laptops in the hands of every student offer unique opportunities to integrate technology into instruction. The following is a description of how various technologies have been introduced into a new undergraduate physics course called Physics of Sound at a so-called laptop institution. This article presents classroom vignettes that demonstrate the potential for using computer technologies in science instruction. Quantitative and qualitative research has shown that students not only appreciate use of technology, but feel the course could not easily be offered without it. The relative impact of individual technologies is discussed based on surveys and interviews.
