When playing outside during recess, a group of first-grade students noticed a lizard in the grass. They observed it for a while but it was very hard to see. This experience led the author to conduct a series of activities to teach her students the importance of camouflage for survival of some animals. They soon realized how important it is for an animal to blend into its surroundings and how camouflage increases an animal's chance of escaping detection by a predator. This article describes the hands-on and inquiry-based activities that delighted students while learning about the marvels of camouflage.
