The Case Study: Opening Day -- Getting Started in a Cooperative Classroom

What happens during the first few days of a new course can set a tone that inspires students to work actively and cooperatively to achieve success in the new semester. One professer figured out a way to motivate his organic chemistry class by beginning each new year with activities designed to convince his students that they are valued as individuals. Not only do these activities help them to develop a rapport and appreciate the knowledge and diversity of their fellow classmates, but they also set out to demonstrate the great power that working together in cooperative teams has to enhance their learning.
