Washington State now allows students to obtain a high school varsity letter in community service if they complete over 150 community service hours in a calendar year. With this in mind, the author has integrated community service into the biology curriculum. Students volunteer for the local Stream Team organization—a coalition with hundreds of volunteers whose goal is to improve the quality of streams for the benefit of fish, wildlife, and people. This volunteer effort is just one example of how students can participate in meaningful, inquiry-based projects that teach them about science and its role in everyday life.
