Preparing Undergraduate Women for Science Careers

Journal of College Science Teaching—March/April 2004

To learn more about how the barriers women in science face can be eased or circumvented, the authors examined how an undergraduate research program prepared female undergraduates for science careers. The skills, confidence, and increased motivation to seek science careers that resulted from research experiences, relationships with mentors, and opportunities to present research papers at state and national meetings were important in facilitating women’s entrance to and success in graduate and professional studies and in research-related positions.
