How to Make Nonscience Majors More Receptive to Organic Chemistry: Building Student Intrigue in Chemistry—Brooklyn College’s “Stories-Behind-the-Story” Strategy

Journal of College Science Teaching—May 1998

Stories of crime and punishment serve as the impetus for engaging students in science topics as part of a unique approach to teaching chemistry at Brooklyn College. This article describes a successful approach used to help students appreciate the major role of functional groups in the chemistry of organic compounds. The approach, which has reduced the intimidation factor and enhanced student interest in organic chemistry, relies on a "stories-behind-the-story" theme.
