A Successful Model for Introducing Research in an Undergraduate Program: Confronting the Challenge of Drawing Minorities into Graduate Computer Programs at Florida A&M University

Journal of College Science Teaching—November 1998

The challenges of introducing research in undergraduate programs at four-year institutions are many. Florida A&M University (FAMU) designed a model for stimulating research activities among faculty and students and for increasing the number of students seeking graduate degrees. This paper discusses the design and implementation of the SEREL model, which integrates research in undergraduate curriculum without additional coursework. The primary goal of the model is to encourage and prepare students to pursue graduate degrees in computing.
