Research and Teaching: Factors Affecting Participation in Traditional and Inquiry-Based Laboratories

Journal of College Science Teaching—December 2001/January 2002

The authors studied participation, achievement, and attitude in cookbook and inquiry-based, introductory biology laboratories through observations, interviews, and attitude/knowledge surveys. A positive relationship, stronger in inquiry-based than cook-book labs, existed between performing hands-on activities and achievement. Participation differences between men and women disappeared in the inquiry-based lab.
