Active Learning in the Lecture Hall: A Nonlaboratory Science Course for the Nonscience Major

Journal of College Science Teaching—May 1997

In this article, the author modified a primarily lecture, general education course for nonscience majors to engage the students in a variety of active learning activities. Students' skills for cooperative learning were developed slowly, beginning with small challenges and growing into much larger ones. A course designed to elicit active learning is challenging for all involved—faculty and students—and demands good resources, as well as an excellent textbook.
