An Authentic Research Experience for Undergraduates on a Budget: Using Data From Simple Experiments to Develop Mini-Research Proposals

Journal of College Science Teaching—November/December 2016

The author describes how she has incorporated mini-research proposals into her lab courses. Students use the data they collect during class experiments as preliminary data, from which they formulate a next-step question and hypothesis, and then research up-to-date methods for testing their hypothesis. Students learn about methods and technologies that they otherwise wouldn’t be exposed to while gaining valuable experience for developing a good senior research project.
