Science Shorts: Snowflake Symmetry

Science and Children—December 2009

Even if you get snow in your area, studying real snowflakes in situ can be challenging, but you can still develop a dynamic, hands- and minds-on exploration that can be conducted year-round. Images of actual snowflakes not only help students better visualize the hexagonal nature of snowflakes but also give them the opportunity to appreciate the fine details in these crystalline structures. As part of a multi-week inquiry into patterns in nature, pre-K students explored snowflakes in their various forms and created symmetrical patterns.
