Find Out Why is the flagship publication of the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) Science and Engineering Outreach Programs. Each issue asks a question that is shaped around children’s interests and explores questions of science, engineering, and technology from a second- or third-grade student’s perspective. The issue outlines an experiment that focuses on helping children and parents use the scientific process to discover possible answers. This article provides a sample lesson in which students investigate the properties of different materials to “find out why” some quarters slide faster than others.
