Cartoon and Bumper Sticker Science

Science Scope—March 2002

Humor is one of the most profound and subtle tools used in influencing people’s attitudes. It is also an efficient and pleasant way to communicate information. Humor can be found in every type of media, including movies, plays, books, photographs, dance, paintings, and commercials. Two of the most popular forms used in contemporary culture to make a quick political or social statement are bumper stickers and cartoons. In this activity, students develop their own bumper stickers and cartoons to influence people’s attitudes about environmental issues.
