Fact or Fiction?

Science Scope—November/December 2000

This article describes how to use the radio broadcast of H.G. Well’s War of the Worlds as a backdrop to studying the planets and how they differ from our planet. This approach can serve as a powerful force to motivate students to understand our solar system. Science fiction stories create a bridge and stimulus to the imaginations of children (Nauman and Shaw, 1994). Memorized facts about planets can easily be forgotten, but an activity linked to students’ imaginations will foster an understanding at a deeper level. Internet resources are also included.
