Connecting Biotechnology and Society

The Science Teacher—April 2003

A recombinant DNA activity allows students to consider the benefits and costs of genetic engineering. Laboratory activities in biotechnology can be adapted to provide unique opportunities for students to explore socio-cultural issues in the science classroom. Through simulated and actual gene splicing activities, students begin to understand the science involved in recombinant DNA technology and develop personal statements that support individual decision-making strategies.
