Investigating an Aerial Image First

The Science Teacher -- February 2006

Conventional instructional routines used to introduce optics concepts can be ineffective at developing an in-depth conceptual understanding that allows students to apply optics concepts to simple, but real, optical systems. To correct this problem, the authors describe how they begin their optics curriculum by having students observe an aerial image in free space by using guided inquiry to help students build a strong conceptual understanding of how converging lenses form real images.
