The vision the author has for her students, who are mainly African American females, can be summarized in one word—success. They need to know that access to science is not limited to the Albert Einsteins of the world but also is available to the Anitas, Mayas, and Angelas of the world. The thinking and reasoning skills they develop in her class may one day encourage them to pursue careers as doctors, teachers, lawyers, and scientists. This article describes how she implements her formula for success by using inquiry-based science methods and fostering a positive learning environment.
