The Prepared Practitioner: Data, Data Everywhere

The Science Teacher—November 2009

We are awash in tables, charts, and graphs. Newspapers display data in every section—from economic information to sports statistics to weather reports. Even the entertainment section features data on television and movie viewing. Using empirical data to make conclusions separates science from other ways of understanding the world, and interpreting this data requires understanding its graphical display. As a result, scientific literacy is absolutely dependent on people being able to create and—more importantly—understand the meaning behind all of these data displays.
