To address the concern of common lag time at the beginning of the school year, the science department at Detroit’s Kettering High School opened the 2002 school year with a student symposium. Each science class conducted the same experiment, analyzed data, and constructed tables and graphs for presentation. The unit was designed to last two weeks with the last day, a Friday, reserved for presentations. On that Friday, all of the science classes convened in one room to present their findings. Overall, the symposium had been successful and, with a few tweaks here and there, it would be used again in the future.
