Communication Gone Wrong in the Gut

Cytokines and Colitis

Communication Gone Wrong in the Gut

Abstract

This case study tells the story of “Skylar” and her mom “Angie” who suffers from persistent diarrhea. What begins as a seemingly acute case turns chronic after a few weeks and Angie is eventually diagnosed with lymphocytic colitis. Skylar has recently learned about immunity, inflammation, and intestinal function in her anatomy and physiology course. When searching for a diagnosis and treatment, she reviews the basics of inflammation, regulation by cytokines, and the unique inflammatory events seen in colonic tissue given its localized microanatomy. The case study further explores how the immune system can be harnessed through cytokines to treat chronic gut inflammation. This case study was developed to supplement an undergraduate anatomy and physiology course that covers immunology and the digestive system. It can also be expanded for use in an undergraduate senior-level immunology course.

Overview

Objectives

  • Search medical databases such as PubMed to find current research on gut immunity.
  • Define colitis, the clinical manifestation of colon inflammation.
  • Understand the role of pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines in the regulation of inflammation.
  • Describe clinical differences between irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
  • Become familiar with the multiple immune cell types and structures in the colon that induce inflammation.
  • Connect inflammation to gut physiology and diarrhea.
  • Identify cytokines used in immunotherapy approaches to treat colitis.
