Analogies, or comparisons based on similarities between things that are otherwise dissimilar, can greatly enhance science learning for children. Analogous reasoning “is a central component of human cognition. It is involved in classification and in learning, it provides a tool for thought and explanation, and it is important for discovery and creative thinking.” (Goswami 1992). This article explains how one third-grade teacher incorporated analogy-based activities into an interdisciplinary lesson on bats.
