Burning Questions About Calories

Science Scope—April 2001

Encouraging students to define problems through asking questions about the topic has a positive impact on classroom morale. First, the teacher benefits from increased understanding of students’ knowledge and background. Second, because students have identified their own questions, they gain ownership of the curriculum. In the lesson described here, questions related to calories serve as the organizing center around which problems are explored and knowledge is created.
