In November 2009, President Obama helped launch National Lab Day (NLD)—an initiative that promises to become the most ambitious science–education partnership project ever in the United States. NLD is a nationwide movement to “build local communities of support that will foster ongoing collaborations among volunteers, students, and educators”; it is supported by over 200 government, public, and private organizations, including NSTA (NLD 2009). The goal is to inspire a new generation of innovators by pairing scientists and engineers with students and their teachers to create thousands of science projects around the United States.
