The Fifty-Cent Optics Lab

Science Scope—October 1999

Any teacher who has had the pleasure of giving students their first view of an image made by a handheld lens will agree that optics is addictive. Seeing how a magnifying glass works, building a telescope, and discovering that a partial lens produces an entire image are other basic optics activities that still excite students. All of these experiments and many more are easily accessible to any teacher with the cardboard optics kit described in this article.
