Forestry 101

The Science Teacher—February 2000

The world’s population is increasing at a phenomenal rate. One of the resources this growing population relies on now, and will rely on more as nonrenewable resources are used up, is wood. Currently, wood is used for building shelter and furniture, for making paper products, and as fuel. The challenge for future generations is to ensure continual production of quality forests. Therefore, the author’s curriculum involves students in managing a school forest to create an appreciation for and an awareness of the impact of the growing human population on forests. This activity, which is described in this article, provides many avenues teachers can explore in their own classrooms.
