Each year, Americans generate 250 million tons of waste, recycle or compost about 33% of it, and dispose of most of the rest in landfills (EPA 2009). Though recycling has increased in the United States since 1980, waste generation has increased along with it (EPA 2009). The average American creates 2 kg (4.5 lbs.) of waste daily (EPA 2009; Tyler Miller 2007). This month's column provides an activity to help get students thinking about the waste they create—and how they can make less.
