Harry Potter as a Context for Problem-Based Learning

Science Scope -- January 2004

This innovative thematic unit for middle school students builds on the Harry Potter phenomenon. Students are immersed in problem-based learning as they study a science and language arts curriculum as it might have been taught at Hogwarts School. The focus of this lesson centers on the Kingdom of Fungi. Students are able to imagine Harry Potter studying mushrooms and fungi as part of his curriculum at Hogwarts School, and recognize that they are engaging in the process of inquiry, which was taught by Professor Sprout.
