In an effort to improve inquiry learning in the classroom, the authors modified a standard, inquiry-based curricula to provide opportunities for students to discuss discrepant events. The tool, called Hypothesis-Based Learning (HBL), requires students to make an observation, attempt an explanation for the observation, think of a way to test the explanation, and perfom the test. This less restrictive environment allows students to explore a variety of concepts in a single lesson, and promotes student ownership of the learning process.
