Idea Bank: The Apple Genomics Project

The Science Teacher—October 2008

Genomics is the study of an organism’s entire genome. Because genomics is a relatively new discipline, it can be difficult to find teaching materials, especially those that offer a variety of educational modalities. To address this need, researchers and educators have developed The Apple Genomics Project website. This website features genomic information and computer animations that explain common genomic laboratory procedures. Using an apple as the model organism, computer animations enhance learning by explaining and displaying the complex techniques and procedures associated with the field of genomics.
