Two Bad Ants, a fictional story detailing the journey of “two bad ants” that stray from their colony and choose to stay in a container full of large, white, sweet-tasking crystals (sugar)—was the catalyst for an engaging five-day study with third-grade students. In this hands-on investigation with live ants, students are introduced to the process of scientific inquiry; in language arts, the story ushered in lessons about point of view, using sensory details, and developing the writing process. Through artwork and text, students observe human life from the perspective of two small insects.
