Science Sampler: Exploratory Excursions—Documenting slow changes in local parks

Science Scope—January 2009

While hiking a local conservation property and trying to unwind after a hectic day, it dawned on the author that teaching his students about slow changes to the Earth’s surface could be as simple as a walk in the woods. Decaying stumps, ATV tracks, stone walls, and crumbling outcrops were all evidence that nature and humans were altering the Earth’s surface. After talking about these ideas with his sixth-grade teaching team, they decided to plan a field trip to two local land trust properties where students would document change in action. Here he shares the details of their exciting and inquiry-based excursion.
