Habits of mind are the behaviors commonly exhibited by successful people when the solution to a problem is not immediately evident (Costa and Kallick 1992). In a science classroom, persistent students stop and think about a problem they encounter before running up to ask the teacher or raising their hand. Instead of asking the teacher what to do, they might describe the steps they’ve tried and then request guidance. In this article, the author shares some methods and activities to help her students to persist over the course of the school year.
