JoinShoebox Spectroscopy
In the following experiment, students are asked to construct a visible-light spectrometer using commonly available and relatively inexpensive equipment. In doing so, they are able to clearly see and understand basic spectroscopic principles and measurements. This article has previously appeared in the October 1998 issue of The Science Teacher but has been reprinted due to the related focus of this issue’s theme, Science on a Shoestring Budget.
