Student-centered Scheduling

The Science Teacher—January 2000

Last year the authors embarked on a study to find out whether more student-centered instruction was occurring in block-scheduled biology classes than in those of traditional duration and whether the student-centered strategies recommended by the Standards were implemented more often in block-scheduled science classes. Results indicated that students in classes with mostly student-centered instruction scored significantly higher on achievement tests than students in classes with mostly teacher-centered instruction. This article was first published in September, 1998.
