Teaching to the Power of 10: Microscopic & macroscopic scaling activties for the classroom

The Science Teacher – December 2000

Traditional scaling activities put students through the paces of the exercise but do not provide relevant associations with the idea of size and how greatly size varies in our universe. The traditional scaling was rethought and these activities were designed to give students only fragmented clues. As a result, the activities challenge the class, facilitate the use of higher order problem-solving and thinking skills, and require students to apply prior knowledge.
