Scaling Up for STEM

Instructional Materials, PLUs, and Web Seminars

About The Scaling Up For STEM Initiative

For nearly a decade, the Northrop Grumman Foundation and NSTA have partnered to improve science teaching, ensuring more students have access to STEM learning and careers. Through the Scaling Up for STEM Initiative, the Northrop Grumman Foundation supports teacher professional learning cohorts, as well as the development of high-quality instructional materials (HQIM) and professional learning resources that are available to the general public.

Instructional Materials

The Scaling up for STEM initiative provides High-Quality Instructional Materials (HQIM) that provide opportunities for students to explain real-world phenomena and design solutions to problems. In doing so, students enact science and engineering practices and critical workforce readiness skills. In addition, the lessons provide connections to today’s Northrop Grumman STEM professionals and their career paths.

Lesson Plans

Professional Learning Units

The Scaling Up for STEM Professional Learning Units are self-paced asynchronous learning opportunities. Teachers can positively influence students to explore and pursue careers in STEM. These careers include, but are not limited to, the science, engineering, computer science, and healthcare fields. The learning experiences designed for the Scaling Up for STEM Professional Learning Units will encourage shifts in teaching practice that:

  • Support the development of students’ identities as competent science and engineering learners.
  • Provide opportunities for developing the Science and Engineering Practices and Career Readiness Competencies.
  • Build familiarity with potential career journeys and how scientists, engineers, and STEM professionals solve problems that impact society.

Integrating Engineering Practices and Career Competencies into Science Classrooms

A Framework for K-12 Education calls for the integration of engineering design into K-12 science classrooms. This PLU introduces the challenges and opportunities this shift raises. Participants will explore connections between the Science and Engineering Practices (SEPs) and Career Readiness Competencies (CRCs) and consider how students enact them in a sample lesson. This PLU is Part 1 in a four-part series.

The Northrop Grumman Foundation is focused on increasing access to the tech workforce and removing barriers to STEM and workforce education initiatives across K-12 to post-secondary pathways. Our goal is expanding the STEM pipeline by ensuring the enrollment and success of members of the military and veteran communities and those who have traditionally been underserved and excluded.
