Nature Transects

Science and Children—November/December 2000

Scientists commonly use transects as a method of gathering information about a particular area, including studying the distribution of organisms across an area or seeing transitional changes between habitats. Transecting involves observing an area, collecting data, thinking critically, evaluating the data, and eventually communicating the findings. This article describes how teachers can use transects to assess students’ science-process skills because they can be used in various ways and modified to best fit the individual class’s needs and levels.
