Science Sampler: Smelling the chocolate—The Perks of modeling habit of mind

Science Scope—April/May 2010

Branston, a sixth-grade urban charter school student, used scientific habits of mind to explain a real event. This was due to a series of lessons that make up the “smell” unit (Krajcik et al. 2006), a six-week, project-based unit to develop a model of the particulate nature of matter. At the completion of the smell unit, Branston used the consensus model to demonstrate deep understanding and explain a real event from his own experience. As a result, he demonstrated a positive attitude toward science when he realized how useful science models are for explaining natural events in the real world.
