Science Sampler: Teacher read-alouds make science come alive

Science Scope—January 2011

Demonstrations, hands-on activities, and videos are common ways an industrious science teacher will provide inquiry-based instruction, offering engaging access to the middle school science curriculum. In this article, the authors present short teacher read-alouds of authentic texts as another method of making the science curriculum meaningful and creating lasting connections for students. Though teacher read-alouds are most often associated with elementary school classrooms, middle school students derive great benefits from teacher read-alouds, as well. They provide (a) the rationale for why teacher read-alouds enhance any middle school science curriculum, (b) criteria for choosing appropriate texts for read-alouds, and (c) a framework for planning how to incorporate a teacher read-aloud into the classroom.
