A Journey in Teaching: The National Board Certification Process

Science Scope—March 2001

The education field recognizes that children need time and encouragement to reflect on and communicate their understandings. By writing, speaking, and drawing what they do and learn, students’ conceptual understandings increase (Battista 1999; Jurdak and Abu Zein 1998). Teachers, too, are lifelong learners and need to recognize these same needs in themselves. The National Board Teacher Certification process is the perfect model for this professional development. This article describes one teachers' journey through this rewarding experience.
