Scope on the Skies: Connected Computing

Science Scope—October 2016

This column focuses on astronomy throughout the year. This month’s issue discusses how students can partake in scientific research through distributed computing, where the computing for a research project is done on a network of computers in different locations. Some distributed computing projects help search for life beyond Earth by analyzing data gathered by a radio telescope, while others review photometric measurements gathered by observatories to catalog the physical characteristics of asteroids.
