Taking Flight with NASA

Science Scope—September 1999

Our lives are integrally connected to airplanes. The products we buy, the mail we send and receive, and the vacations or business trips we take are all made more efficient by flight. We take for granted the airplanes that move across our skies, far above the Earth. Yet, students are often at a loss to explain how airplanes generate lift, let alone how an airplane’s flight is controlled once airborne. To fill this classroom void, this article describes how to take flight with the NASA Ames Research Center.
