Science Sampler: Inquiry goes outdoors—What can we learn at the pond?

Science Scope—September 2008

The Oregon 4-H Wildlife Stewards program has been training teachers and volunteers to convert school grounds to education sites by constructing schoolyard wildlife habitats since 1997. The publication What Can We Learn at the Pond? 4-H Wildlife Stewards Master Leader Guide (Bourdeau 2004a) was written to support the program’s focus on developing science skills. Lessons in this publication are supported by the Inquiry in Action model (Bourdeau 2004b), which provides a framework for students to use all the steps needed for science inquiry. This article illustrates how this model can be used to engage students in an investigation about life in and around ponds.
