Instructors are constantly searching for more authentic ways of assessing student work. Authentic assessments model activities students might perform in the outside world. As a concluding activity of a unit on the hole in the ozone layer, the environmental science class staged a talk show on the topic. Using the talk show as a final assessment allowed the class to have an informal debate in a familiar format. By working cooperatively on a fun and challenging assignment, students can use creativity, preparation skills, and complex reasoning to demonstrate knowledge in an authentic way.
