Positive Pitfalls

The Science Teacher—May 2004

“What’s in your pit?” is the common question students ask one another as they enthusiastically collect and analyze the contents of pitfall traps set 24 hours earlier. In a collaborative effort, these students designed and conducted pitfall trap investigations that combined their interest in the natural world with their love of technology. The pitfall trap experiment demonstrates how students can advance from structured “cookbook” science investigations to “science as inquiry.”
