Praise Acres Project

The Science Teacher—May 2004

The “Praise Acres Project,” which initiated from a letter written by a local resident, turned into a long-running, inquiry-based lesson benefiting high school students and the community. The resident expressed the desire to develop a wetlands and outdoor lab facility on his property for students that consisted of a creek, a small deciduous forest, and a vacant field. To help the owner, students monitored the physical, chemical, and biological quality of the creek and identified the trees in the deciduous forest. The scheduled visits were designed with activities that satisfied many state science standards and enhanced the high school science curriculum.
