Allergic to the Laboratory: A creative setup allows students with latex allergies full participation in chemistry labs

The Science Teacher – October 2000

Allergic reactions to latex are becoming increasingly common. The reactions occur within a few minutes to an hour of exposure and usually disappear within 24 hours. In this article, a student informed the teacher that she had an allergy to latex. Together the student and the teacher came up with a creative solution—closed circuit television. Instead of letting the students' condition interfere with the labs, the situation was turned into a learning experience. Through creative problem solving students with allergies were able to participate in labs.
