Idea Bank: Science in Fiction

The Science Teacher—September 2001

The Idea Bank provides tips and techniques for creative teaching, in about 1,000 words. This month’s Idea Bank features the Science in Fiction project where students write an essay comparing and contrastng a science fiction book with a corresponding movie. Despite their initial "whining" and complaining students enjoy working on this assignment and when a book or movie uses scientific principles that students have used in depth, the science becomes real to them—not only in the story but in the classroom as well.
