The Science Teacher—September 2002

As a first-year science teacher in a rural area, the author faced numerous challenges. Fortunately, though, her school district offered an innovative teacher program designed especially for first-year teachers and those new to the county. Program participants met on a monthly basis during the school year and—with the help of veteran teachers and school officials—shared ideas on how to grow, develop, and improve. This experience resulted in a valuable support system that offered mentorship along with the rare opportunity to interact with colleagues.
